3 quality days with 2 nights wild camping. Day 1 we summited Cairngorm and Cnap Coire Spreidhe and then descended to the saddle and followed the valleys to the hut. Got benighted on the first day as we spent too long having breakfast at the ski centre. Had intended to spend the first night in the Hutchinson Hut but it was full when we arrived so pitched tents outside.
Day 2, we summited Ben Macdui before heading north and sleeping at Coire Domhain. Nav across the plateau was typically Scottish with very poor vis, high winds and sideways rain. Stuck to traditional map and compass but backed up with a GPS after each 3 legs of pacing.
Day 3, fairly easy day after a cold night. Descended from the cairn at 1141 back into the ski centre.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
