Fairfield Horseshoe anti clockwise. Joined by a friend with almost no winter experience. Stunning day though at times a bit of map orientation nav needed. Good neve higher up. Thick mist in the central fells gave rise to a cloud inversion. Alpine day.
- It is most likely that the ascent of a significant mountain is included in the day. Fairfield Horseshoe
- The individual takes part in the planning and leadership. My route.
- Navigation skills are required. Map orientation.
- Knowledge is increased and skills practised. A good chance to practice some instruction on walking in snow.
- Attention is paid to safety. At all times - high risk of hypothermia.
- Adverse weather and underfoot conditions may be encountered. Bitterly cold northerly winds and some slippery and icy sections to negotiate. The descent was potentially lethal down into Rydal.
- Five hours or more journey time.
- Conditions encountered should be in terrain and weather comparable to that found in the UK in true winter conditions.
- An ice axe and crampons are likely to be required. I was able to demonstrate some ice axe techniques but more importantly, just good step kicking.
