Description

I walked with an 'equals' partner and we planned the route using an O.S. 1:25,000 map paper version and using the computer. We took rucksacks with waterproofs, food, drink, first aid and some spare clothes as we had looked at the weather forecast and knew the weather was likely to be wet. I had never walked in this area before.
We left Minehead and followed Macmillan Way West through trees ( Heavy rain and thunder started.) and then out onto open moorland and through Wooton Courtenay to Dunkery Beacon. (Height 500m) We had looked at the contours and knew the ascent would be long and gradual. At the beacon, which was barely visible, we turned SSE to Dunkery Bridge. 14km/ 8.6miles. We then followed a small road and bridleway, Long Lane track , to Winsford. 8km/ 5miles. We then followed Yellowcombe Lane, track to and took first left on bend after 1 mile towards the disused quarry ( weather improved here) and continued for 100m on the track to the road. We turned right on the road and followed it until it joined a track and turned right and followed the track to Dulverton. 8km/ 5 miles. From Dulverton we joined the Ex Valley Way South and continued on this past Exbridge, where we entered Devon. to Bampton. 10km/6.2miles. We left Bampton heading East towards Luttrell Quarry and followed this minor road to Tiverton. 10km/ 6miles.
Total distance 52km/ 32 miles. Total time 14 hours.
