Description

Solo day from New Radnor to 'bag' the three Simms in Radnor Forest. Route went around the weapons testing range clockwise - straightforward on the way up and descent but foggy and fewer features above 500m. Set out shortly after 9 and back at 2pm. Used a bearing and pacing to find summit of Rhos Fawr and bearings and timings from this summit to past Black Mixen to confirm paths were going the right way. Could make a good day walk for a group travelling from Gloucestershire. Boots now leaking - replacements needed.

Area : Radnor Forrest

Radnor Forest (Welsh: Fforest Faesyfed) is a rock dome in Mid Wales, and a forest only in the mediaeval sense of an unenclosed area used for hunting.[1] The highest point is Rhos Fawr or Great Rhos, a broad featureless plateau which reaches 660 metres (2,165 ft), and a similar plateau adjoining to the east, Black Mixen is the only Nuttall to have a communications mast (a radio transmitter) on its summit.[2] According to a legend, the local people built four churches in a circle around the Radnor Forest in order to contain the last dragon in Wales, who lay sleeping in the area.
