Description

West Buttress, Sgurr Sgumain with Phil Blackwood. Very enjoyable. Near the top our ridge flattened in classic buttress style, with a notched and pinnacled section to negotiate, which was fun. Beyond, a very steep buttress wasn't mentioned in the guidebooks we had seen. It is referred to as the final tower in a later Skye Scrambles guide, which, if we had read, would have put us off approaching the loose crest and tottering towers it describes. The Final Tower looked rather steep and loose and the traversing path onto Sron na Ciche looked much better, so we took that.
Continued over the summit of Sgurr Sgumain and took the SW ridge to Sgurr Alasdair, avoiding the Bad Step. Met up with others from SMMC. Traversed to Sgurr Thearlaich, then the tricky descent to Bealach Mhic Coinnich. Followed Hart's Ledge (aka Collie's Ledge). Met guided party with Gerry Ackroyd, who was undertaking maintenance, removing some small stones and replacing them with a larger one. We doubled back to the summit of Sgurr Mhic Coinnich. Traversed to and descended An Stac screes to Coire Lagan and thence Glen Brittle.
