Description

Aimee Gabay
02/02/2022 - 1.15-hour session
Lesson Plan:
Auto-belay warmup – 3 easy climbs with short lope clipping
Consolidation day for lead belaying and lead climbing clipping.
Extra information about belayer position in relation to wall and climber.

Reflection:
Today’s idea was that Aimee and Mellie would come for the session warmed up and we could start lead climbing straight of, that didn’t happen due to two factors. Till the very end I wasn’t informed that Mellie is not coming for the session, which means Aimee would be by herself.
Due to that session having to be changed – Aimee will mainly climb and her belaying will not be consolidated till the next session.
We did quick warm-up on auto belay with 3 climbs up to 5+, after that we have changed place to vertical / steep lead climb. Aimee climbed 3 routes on that wall (f5, f5, f5+). Her clipping was good but there were moments when she either went over the clip too high making it hard to clip or tried to clip from bent arm – burning lots of energy.
Later we have changed wall again and found nice long f6a+ with the crux very high up (for the safety) - at that point Aimee did ask what to do if she would fall. I said that she should just naturally fall off the wall and prepare for the impact protecting her face and body from the wall / holds.
Fall didn’t happen but there were 2 close calls for that. She really enjoyed the problem solving on that wall as her clipping slipped due to harder route, and more demanding body positions.
I have mentioned to her that she should start looking more at route planning and start anticipating where the problems may occur. She nodded; this topic will have to be explored more In depth at the later session.
She also mentioned that she would like to try some falling as she is not sure how is that different to top rope fall - I have tried to explain that on the ground but it didn’t have same weight as it would be on the wall.
