3 hours of set up practice and instruction for Andy.
As Andy is going for his RCIA we decided to stay up the crag and do set up and work.
We practiced a bottom rope set up where Andy used 4 pieces of gear equalised out on a static line and sling; I showed Andy how to decrease amount of rope in the system using clove hitch. I then altered a BR line with bowline / alpine and made some purposeful mistakes and asked for feedback, how he would
Improve it and would the set up work. Good discussion and problem debating with reasoning. Andy’s set up was potentially too high and we discussed problem avoidance as opposed to solving as well as group management.
Moved onto a Top rope set up; as Andy was working I saw how low he was going so I set up a quick one and got him to watch before he went away. Set up a great line.
Moved to group abseils; set up and demonstrated to Andy how I would move clients around, taking care of their safety, doing a trust exercise before lowering and problem solving with scenarios. Andy then replicated and did well.
EBI’s for Andy - remember to think about clients; not on a personal climbing day but almost being anal regarding their ability and knowledge : attention
