After Sawtry field trip, I had a few hours & so walked from airport hotel to Hvalsneskirkya, first round the Nato fence, then direct to the sea and south to church at Hvalsnes. All this in cold clear sunshine. I was thinking of returning via Sandgerdi but discovered the 'Hvalsnesvegur' & in view of a very black cloud to west I decided to take it as the quickest route back. It seemed to be an ancient pathway with stones moved to either side and occasional marker cairns. After a while, and negotiating a few fences to enclose Icelandic horses, I lost all trace of the route & headed to the Nato fence. This country is rather like the Cairngorm plateau, with heather, crowberry, juniper & reindeer moss, except it is just a few metres above the sea. By now the black cloud had caught me 7 it was pretty ferocious so I was pleased to follow the fence back. The hotel staff could not believe I had done this!
