Description

Start: Dufton YHA NY 68871 25077 . End: Alston YHA NY 71702 46086
Distance: 32k
Duration: 8 hours
Direction: Lanes NNW to Kirkland; bridlepath ENE to Greg's Hut; continuing NE Pennine Way over Alston Moor, then river valley N NW to Alston.
Description: Continuing on the Pennine way for a challenging 20 mile stretch across Cross Fell from Dufton YHA to Alston YHA. Atrocious conditions all morning, heavy rain. Delayed start and adjusted route hoping to miss some of the rain and make this section a bit easier at start but it still rained until about 3pm. Thankfully, ended up walking with another trail walker staying at the YHA nearly all the way. Greg's Hut bothy was a welcome lunch stop. There are lots of sink holes in the peat bog - I actually fell with one leg about 50cm into one but managed to keep rest out and clean up in Greg's Hut. The map shows lots of them and warnings in some areas.

Area : Northern Pennines

Between the A69 and the A66. The region is widely considered to be one of the most scenic areas of the United Kingdom. The North Pennines and Nidderdale are designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
