Nightmare! The mock clients were adamant about little tryfan, I suggested a crag out of the NW wind, Clogwyn yr Oen or Tremadog . But we went anyway. Clients warned that air temperature would be cold 0-2deg and some rain forecast. They didn't bring enough clothes, gloves, or suitably warm trousers. Client 2 got too cold and we had to bail.
Aims:
Client1 develop confidence in nut placements and build multipitch belays
Client 2 become competent second.
Suggested more ground based activities, to maintain warmth and develop skills for transitions and familiarity with gear placements and appropriate belay construction, Client 1 wanted to lead regardless and for client 2 to try leading. Compromised on Client 1 leading undersupervision whilst I self-lined inspecting gear.
Learning Outcomes:
As the responsible person, I should have:
*created multiple options, all of which are acceptable to myself. Giving clients autonomy within conditions I'm happy with.
*made a better evaluation of clients attire by inspecting kit prior to begining the day
*apply 'floor to the wall' excercises outside under the guise of demonstrating techniques of the day. This tool helps structure the days learning and situates the client into activities and environments that can be managed well.
*been more assertive in the capabilities and limitations of the day based on the conditions to ensure that both clients were serviced well and able to maintain warmth through a variety of activities.
