
PEER-LED MTA NIGHT NAVIGATION WORKSHOP
ROUTE: Started from Threipmuir Car Park, Balerno, Edinburgh. Used area of complex contours NW of Hare Hill.
MEMBERS OF PARTY: Organised by Sean Magee of CPS Activities, Group of seven in total.
CONDITIONS: Dry. Very little breeze, Mild.
DURATION: Just over 3 hours car to car.
SKILLS PRACTISED: Navigation with map and compass at night. Use of contours predominantly, with pacing, bearings, slope aspect, etc. Each person took a leg then rest of group re-located at his target. Mobile phone OS Maps App used to check result.
KEY LEARNING POINTS/CONTRIBUTION TO EXPERIENCE: A great opportunity to build on other night nav. sessions with shared feedback on results among the group. The session increased my own confidence in the accuracy of my skills on subtle and complex terrain.
