Description

2 strong indor climbers and 6a+/6b+ sport climbers interested moving into trad climbing.
Focus on belay building and belaying from above in multipitch setting.
*Climbing in alternating series to provide ample opportunities to build a variety of belays and experience removing gear, simulating swing leads.
*primarily sling belays due to stances chosen, although rope belays included at larger stances and top-out belays with wide gear placements.
*gear storage and re-racking efficiency
*rope management and flaking to ensure transitions
Personal reflection:
*Clients wanted to lead but after requiring input into building belays and further discussion the focus of the day would be best spent learning to place gear and build-in safety for independence. Next steps to move onto placing gear on low grade routes as Kirkus Direct (severe 4a) posed very little climbing difficulties. I would therefore be comfortable with teaching lead on a suitable route with the capability to lace gear.
*Did not always manage stance directionality to the best of my ability resulting in some tangles and climbers having to be climbed over or middle climber getting tie-in ropes twisted.
*Time management: arrived at crag 10.30 reached car 6.30. Route 1 took longer than expected due to further teaching being required and allowing MCI working to bypass us at a stance. Although this lost time was spent on discussion of building a rack and and teaching the use of in and out of reach belays.
