Watching two climbers being coached in lead climbing and belaying. They'd already had the teaching sessions and nailed the clipping part but this one was first time at the sharp end with each other belaying.
Instructor was initally belaying a top rope as backup, focussing on ensuring the new lead belayer was safe. Then route repeated but this time without top rope. Positioning of instructor both when belaying top rope and when not was between belayer and the wall but off to their dominant hand side. The route was a slabby 4+, well within the capabilities of the climber.
They then swapped over and repeated the process. Then moved on to a 5+ but this time on-sight leads.
Debrief after the session focussed on movement of the belayer - how stepping in and out as needed had improved but it was an area to work on next time.
