Description

Final peak-bagging walk to complete ascent of all 158 Welsh SIMMS to mark my 40th birthday, with a group of friends including one 11 year old. Ascended listed peaks plus Erw y Ddafd-ddu. Set off from Hengwm valley car park, choosing the path I knew to be good and steady up the S side of this valley to Drysgol as the least taxing for the group. This paid off as the group were heartened with good progress at relatively little effort. Turned left for Gwaun y Llwyni, racing the 1-year old to the top, then doubled back and followed the ridge North to the edge of lake Bala for shuttle. Great views from along the ridge, Benllyn and Fawddwy tops feeling mountainous and special. Great sense of achievement at the final peak. Group slowed on the descent but ability to see the lake was a motivator. Great walk - now for a new challenge!

Area : Aran Range

Aran Fawddwy, which is only 9 metres (30 ft) short of being a member of the Welsh 3000s, is the highest peak in the Aran mountain range and the 16th highest summit in Wales. The other two Marilyns in this range are Glasgwm and Esgeiriau Gwynion.[4] It is the highest British mountain south of Snowdon and is the principal summit of the predominant southwest-northeast ridge between Dolgellau and Bala, southern Snowdonia, a ridge that continues westwards as Cadair Idris.
