Description

This is our second Mountain Training Rock Skills Introduction course that we have run!
2 candidates this time!
The course report has already been uploaded. However here is a brief overview:
Rock Skills Introduction - course content
The Rock Skills Introduction syllabus covers the following aspects:
1. Background and Planning – Access, Land ownership, Guidebooks, Apps, Websites.
2. Climbing Skills – Bouldering, footwork, body positioning, weight transfer, balance, spotting.
3. Footwear and Equipment – Understanding your: climbing shoes, harnesses, belay devices, carabiners and bouldering pads.
4. Technical skills – Knots, belaying with a variety of different devices, lowering, holding falls, introduction to abseiling.
5. Environmental Knowledge – SSSI sites, flora and fauna, respect the rock, leave no trace.
6. Hazards and Emergency Procedures – Understanding and respecting the environment, knowing your exits and nearest A&E, emergency contacts – who and when.
Both climbers are working towards being instructors themselves and climb regularly together. This meant that they had a really nice dynamic between them and were both eager to learn and push themselves. They loved learning about outdoor bouldering and group management with that activity as well as using all our different belay devices and getting a greater understanding of what would be appropriate for a novice/group and what would not. They got a lot of hands on experience and even got a lot of climbing done over the day.
The new flash cards for Flora and fauna were really helpful.
