Description

After meeting at YHA Hartington, I completed introductions and presentations on Mountain Training, The MTA, Weather, the scheme and definitions of terrain for the Lowland Leader. We then started our walk and made our way to Dale End and had lots of discussions on navigation techniques as well as other things like the history of the area, local flora and fauna and leadership styles. We then made our way towards the Caves at Beresford Dale putting into practice the timing, pacing and other navigation strategies. We continued our walk and unfortunately the group got a little lost, however, this was a great learning opportunity for the group to go through lost procedures, getting back on track and a few other strategies to assist this. After walking around Beresford Lane we headed to Wolfscote Dale before heading SW to the outskirts of Alstonefield. Here we headed back north and around "Low Plantation" and to Narrowdale Hill and continue to The Field Farm. Here the navigation got tricky again. We then headed back to Beresford Dale and then back to Hartington and this gave a great opportunity to discuss hazards. At the end of the day, we arrived back at the Youth Hostel and sat down for a debrief and a chat about route planning. The group then spent some time researching a route for the following day.
