Description

2 Day Trip from Finchampstead Village, Berkshire to Winchester, Hampshire following the rote of the Three Castles Way.
Starting from home in Finchampstead take footpaths to Eversley Cross then up to woodland on Warren Heath and across to Hartley Wintney. From Hartley Wintney cross open fields to Winchfield and pick up the Basingstoke canal towpath. Very easy walking canal side to the collapsed tunnel at Greywell (good pint of DoomBar). Now on chalk down land to the small hamlet of Tunworth. From Tunworth follow ancient green lanes to finish day one at the pretty village of Ellisfield. (34.89km and 347m of vertical)
Day two early start just after dawn. through quiet lanes and footpaths across open fields and mixed woodland to the village of Bradley. From there to Lower and Upper Wield. Then across Abottswold Down. Great views in lovely weather although the thick wet clay made for hard going at times. Finally drop into the Itchen Valley through Easton and under the M3 and A34 into Winchester to finish with a pint by the Cathedral. (31.87km and 337m of vertical)
