Description

A fine day in Scotland. 'Blue bird' weather conditions with little very minimal snowfall around the Carn Ban Mor area. Snow conditions underfoot were exhausting however with lots of fresh unconsolidated snow as well as deposits of windslab varying in areas, especially on westerly aspects.

From Auchlean, navigated east along track to summit Carn Ban Mor. Navigated a safe route up its west aspect to gain the summit, ensuring to stay well clear of re-entrant system to the south which was loaded. From Carn ban more practiced micro navigation via Meall Dubhag (998m)-Moine Mor-957m-Loch nan Cnapnan. Navigated east up to Sgor an Lochain Uaine and onto Cairn Toul. Same descent route to Allt Luineag where we practiced emergency shelters and waited here until dark.

Night navigation practice back to Carn Ban Mor via Tom Dubh-Loch nan Cnapnan-Allt Sgairnich. Descent back to car. 12 hours total journey time.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
