About

Meet 1000 at the Flotterstone Visitor Centre Car Park, Penicuik, Midlothian EH26 0PR Decimal co-ordinates @55.8547981,-3.2272352 The Pentland Hills record a range of geological and geomorphological features spanning over 400 million years from the volcanic eruptions that provide the basement of the range to evidence of the power of glacial action and the sudden, violent changes wrought upon the landscape by glacial meltwaters. Come to these ‘pocket mountains’ with an experienced geologist and palaeontologist training for ML(S) and HML to find out about the history that is set in stone. The plan is to have a full day CPD event (starting at 1000 and ending around 1600) with an emphasis on geology and physical geography but with some diversions into other topics ranging from the role of Ben Nevis in splitting the atom to the Carnethy 5 hill race. The low-level route will follow the main path from Flotterstone over to the Bavelaw area then work our way back to Flotterstone using Pentland Rocks!, (http://www.edinburghgeolsoc.org/downloads/lbgcleaflet_pentland.pdf), as well other materials to demonstrate the potential for natural and human history to further enrich the experiences they can offer their clients. Maximum number of participants: 8 Please contact Alistair McGowen to arrange payment via the hillsoffame email adress.
