About

This a two day symposium with indoor and outdoor elements The Mountain Leader, the Mountaineering Instructor and the Environment: What do we teach? How do we teach it? What do we assess? A symposium at Plas y Brenin, The National Mountain Centre This is a two day event with inspirational speakers, and workshops on the hill and in the centre. We will consider how we can better educate and inspire the mountain leaders and instructors of tomorrow about the upland environment in which they lead and instruct, and you will gain 2 CPD points. The symposium will start with a key note talk from Barbara Jones. The Upland Environment, what is special about it? Why is it like this? What is its future? Barbara was the Upland Ecologist at Countryside Council for Wales (now part of National Resources Wales) for twelve years, she is a world leading expert on Lloydia serotina (the Snowdon Lily). Barbara is also a long standing BMC volunteer and has freely given her knowledge and expert advice to walkers and climbers for many years. She is still an active climber herself. Barbara's talk will be followed by a series of specialist talks from the Snowdonia National Park, The National Trust, a local hill farmer, archaeologist, Pred Hughes 'the Slate Man', the Snowdonia Society, Natural Resources Wales and the North Wales Wildlife Trust, all talking about how their work relates to the upland environment and how it is used recreationally. There will also be inspirational talks about the geology , birdlife, and mammals of the uplands. An evening session will update us on the work of the Snowdon Partnership. Day two will feature practical workshops looking at how we train about the environment ‘on the hill’ and what we are looking to assess in different types of leaders and instructors. These sessions will be led by senior instructors at Plas y Brenin and supported by Jim Langley of natureswork.co.uk The cost of the symposium includes coffee, lunch, and tea and cake on both days. There are further ticket options for accomodation, and dinner, please choose your ticket carefully. The event will be hosted and chaired by Mike Raine, Senior Instructor at Plas y Brenin and author of Nature of Snowdonia.
