About

Leadership is at the heart of Mountain Training courses, and decision-making is at the heart of leadership; but can we develop our knowledge in these subject areas as trainers and how can we best develop these skills in our learners?

This day intends to unravel some of the current theories around leadership and decision-making, and then explore how we bring them to life in what we do and teach. The day will consider the following:

• How values and beliefs influence how you lead and impacts on those you lead
• How your behaviours as a leader can influence those around you.
• The impact of how ‘controlling’ you are as a leader and how this is a challenge in our dynamic real risk environment.
• If leadership is all about decision-making what are the key influences on a leader’s decisions?
• How can we utilize and manage the influences on a leader’s decisions.
• In the heat of the moment – how do we make decisions?
• How do we ensure our decisions are good?

The day will be delivered in a context based interactive and informative way. This will allow support to be given in sharing ideas and best practice during workshop sessions to develop knowledge around the subject area, with a particular focus on how it is applied in the teaching of potential leaders. The theories and models discussed during the day will be based around transformational leadership, multi-dimensional leadership and professional judgement and decision-making research.

The workshop is for those involved, or interested in becoming involved in working on Mountain Training qualifications. The intention is to allow participants practical opportunities to explore methodologies appropriate to training and assessing Mountain Training qualifications. To keep the day as flexible as possible and make best use of conditions, could delegates come dressed and equipped for outdoor sessions ‘on the hill’. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PACKED LUNCH. The cost, including tea and coffees on arrival, and tea/coffee and cake at the end of each day only, is £35.00 per person. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The course will be facilitated by Doug Cooper. Doug has worked full time as a MIC and Level 5 coach at Glenmore Lodge since 1996 where he is Chief Instructor delivering a range of courses along with supporting the coaching and education within the centre. Over the years he has worked and been active in the development on an extensive range of MTUK and British Canoeing awards. Doug is actively involved in supporting and developing coaching/leading in the Adventure Sports Coaching sector. With an MSc in Performance Coaching from Stirling University along with publications in international coaching journals and magazines he is well placed to do this. He is an active practitioner at heart but believes in furthering knowledge through action-based research to then contextualize in the real world to support leaders and coaches. The low cost of this training event is made possible by the generous support of Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre.
