About

Basic GPS for Outdoor Leaders

A basic GPS training course for competent navigators who may have used a GPS device in the past, wish to learn more before buying one, or may even own one but have not used it often. This really gets to grip with core GPS skills and capabilities of modern devices. It comprises a classroom session and extensive practical exercises indoors and outside. It is particularly suitable for outdoor leaders, with a specific session covering leadership aspects of GPS. Included is the hire of a modern GPS unit for the day (but participants may use their own GPS if it is suitable; preferably a modern Garmin device), together with high-quality colour illustrated handouts to take away. It is only suitable for those who are confident navigating outdoors and does not cover smartphones or wearable GPS devices.

The course is based in the Barton Seagrave Village Hall (opened Sep 17) which has ample parking and good public transport links. Details will be provided by e-mail after booking. Many practical exercises will be carried out in Wicksteed Park, publicly accessible trust-land a few minutes’ walk away. The Hall and Park have cafe facilities (but these may not be open), and suitable shelter, but participants should bring a picnic lunch and be prepared with clothing to be outdoors in any weather.
