About

Technical Advising in Accessible Climbing Activities

Recognised by Adventure For All as an approved training course for Mountaineering Instructors providing specialist technical advice for the delivery of climbing activities for participants with disabilities and impairments.

The course includes theoretical and practical elements covering disability awareness, specialist techniques, the role of a technical advisor, content for site-specific training and assessment, and a nationally recognised Moving and Assisting Course.

Schedule

AM – Moving and Assisting. This element is delivered by an approved provider – Beth Hallows, Physiotherapist. The Moving and Assisting course is valid for three years.

PM – Disability awareness and technical advising – theory session.

EVE – Specialist techniques and delivery of in-house training/assessment – practical session.

Prerequisites

Attendees should hold MIA/MIC/Guide and have previously attended a Climbing For All course. You may still be able to attend if you do not meet these pre-requisites - contact Graeme to discuss this.

On completion of the course, attendees who meet the pre-requisites will be invited to add their names to a database of approved Technical Advisors for accessible climbing activities that will be held by the IOL/AFA and Mountain Training. This database will be distributed to future Climbing For All Course attendees.

Providers

This course has been created by Graeme Hill and Joby Davies, with support from the AFA Committee.

Graeme has been at the forefront of developing access to the outdoors for over 20 years. He assisted in the development of the Climbing For All Course and is one of the main providers of the course. He was instrumental in partnership with the BMC in setting up the GB Paraclimbing Team, has worked with the BMC Equity steering group, and is currently working with the Institute For Outdoor Learining professional practice group, Adventure For All. Graeme works full time as a disability programme manager for Link4Life leisure trust.

Joby is an active Mountaineering Instructor with a wealth of experience providing technical advice for organisations in the adventurous activities industry. Many of Joby’s clients are involved with the delivery of accessible climbing activities, and he has been at the forefront of delivering current best practice through site-specific training schemes. He is a provider for the Mountain Training Climbing Wall Instructor and Coaching schemes.
