Award Description
This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.
This course is based from Ghyll Head Outdoor Centre near Bowness on Windermere in South Lakes. The Centre has been involved in the scheme since 1967 and the trainers are current with Mountain Training and aim to offer a rewarding process on your journey to becoming a mountain leader. The mountain days will be in the Central Fells, Lake District. The course is set in a relaxed environment, with accommodation in our bungalow on site. The course is run over 5 days, where you will have an opportunity to show your leadership and skills but also discuss and share ideas amongst the candidates to consolidate and improve your knowledge, even though on assessment. There will be evening sessions to go through the home paper sent out before the course, small lecture and weather briefings in the morning. There will be a two night 3 days expedition so an opportunity to demonstrate night navigation skills. Course costs is inclusive of VAT and includes all food except expedition food unless you would like to self cater . There will be a hot snack on arrival back from expedition before the de- briefs. Equipment for the mountain should be provided by yourself on assessment however we have a large stock of kit should something be needed at the last minute.
