Award Description
This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.
Mountain Leader Training courses are run over six days and we run them over three weekends in The Peak District, the Lake District and North Wales respectively. This allows us to get into a wide variety of terrain with each area lending themselves to different parts of the syllabus. The course starts at Hagg Farm Outdoor Education Centre on the Peak District's Snake Pass where we spend two days in the High Peak. The second weekend is the expedition weekend in the Lake District and the final weekend is based in Eryri National Park focusing on leading groups in steeper terrain. All the other aspects of the syllabus are covered alongside these core areas.
As part of the training course candidates will be provided with clear feedback to help in the development of an action plan towards their potential future assessment.
Weekend dates:
4th-5th October 2025 - Dark Peak
18th-19th October 2025 - Western Lake District
1st-2nd November 2025 - Ogwen Valley, Eryri
