WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
This is night navigation practise opportunity that will be run as a peer-to-peer learning/practise activity for Mountain Training Association members, held off-path on the rough heather moorland and adjacent heath grassland of Burbage Moor and Houndkirk Moor as it boarders the Houndkirk Road (track) just SW of Sheffield, at night and lasting approx. 2.5 hours.
Please note the activity will invole tramping over trackless heather moorland with hidden ditches/holes, rocks and plenty of other trip hazards so care will be needed.
The start location is the roadside parking on the side of the Hathersage Road A6187 immediately NE of the Fox House Inn. (OS Grid Ref. SK 2674 8032) Please don't use the pub's own car park, it's intended for customers.
This activity will allow people, working in small groups, to seek out a set of pre-identified map features and obstacles on the ground on the moors while using navigation strategies and techniques suitable for both night-time and poor-visibility conditions.
As a peer-to-peer activity attendees will be expected to be familiar with basic map and compass techniques applicable to off-path navigation in poor visibility and be able to take care of themselves on challenging high moorland terrain at night in cold and inhospitable conditions.
We hope participants will be willing to share experience and knowledge and for experienced attendees to be willing to team up with less experienced individuals in a mutually supportive manner.
There will be an opportunity to re-convene in the Inn after the event for an informal debrief if wished.
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED
Bring clothing and equipment suitable for hill walking in winter including rain and windproof jacket (with hood) and over trousers, sturdy walking boots with good grip and ideally water resistant (knee-length gaiters also recommended to protect against the rough heather), plenty of warm insulation layers, hats and gloves and a head-torch (plus spare batteries or a spare head-torch). You may appreciate bringing a trekking pole for stability.
Also a OS Explorer OL1 "Dark Peak" map (either laminated or in a good map case) that you are willing to write on, a fine marker pen to mark your map, a good quality navigation compass, a simple first aid kit and your mobile phone.
It may also be wise to either carry an emergency small group shelter or a plastic emergency bivvi bag.
CATERING/FOOD
There is a public house adjoining the car park where refreshment before or after may be available, as well as a toilet (but for customers only). It might be wise to bring a little emergency food and a small amount to drink.
