A refresher day on snow and avalanches. We will look at:

- Snowpack history in the area this season so far and how this will influence avalanche hazard

- Reading and interpreting the avalanche forecast

- Be Avalanche Aware Process

- Avalanche Problems – what problems to expect and where, and how to spot them in the field

- Route Choice and Planning

- Digging and analysing snow pits in several different locations, discussion of benefits/cons to snow pit analysis

- Identifying common snow grains/structures (e.g. graupel, wind slab, melt-freeze layer, depth hoar, surface hoar, neve, sastrugi)

The workshop will be delivered by Tom Litchfield who is an IML based in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Tom is an avalanche observer for the SLF and will be attending their Advanced Observation professional development course in December. He recently wrote his university dissertation on slab avalanche forecasting and is currently pursuing a masters study in this area. He also has work experience from two avalanche agencies.
