Award Description
This scheme is delivered on the island of Ireland ONLY. The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides a general introduction to hillwalking in Ireland and the fundamentals of mountain navigation. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, day and night navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland.

Saturday
7.30 am Breakfast and make packed lunches.
8.30 am Workshop - personal equipment, how to pack and carry your day-pack 9.30 am Practical hill walk - maps, map setting, contour features, navigational techniques, relocation, distances.
2.30 pm Back to camp for hot drinks/showers. 3.30 pm Workshop - access & responsible recreation, review of maps, weather forecasts and navigation apps.
5.00pm Free time
6.00 pm Dinner & camp fire
7.00 pm Workshop - Mountain Hazards 8.00 pm Chats around the campfire!
Sunday
Strike camp
8.00 am Breakfast and make packed lunches.
9.00 am Workshop - review day 1 workshops, route planning, grid references
10.30 am Practical hill walk - review day 1 skills, pacing, timing, feature recognition, basic compass skills, what to do in a mountain emergency.
3.30 pm Debrief
