Award Description
This scheme is delivered on the island of Ireland ONLY. The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides a general introduction to hillwalking in Ireland and the fundamentals of mountain navigation. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, day and night navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland.
Glaz Gone Wild & Stride MS 2 Residential Wild Camping Weekend
We are so excited to offer you this all inclusive, female led, Mountain Skills 2 Course and Camping Weekend. The Mountain Skills 2 official training course will increase your confidence in the mountains and on the trails. Build on your MS1 skills and become a self proficient hiker. This course is lead by experienced instructors, provided by Louise Lawrence, Jenny Copeland, and accredited by Mountaineering Ireland & The Mountain Training Board Ireland.

• Review of Mountain Skills 1 • Timing calculations • Taking bearings from map • Walking on a bearing • Feature recognition • Navigation at night techniques • Route Planning • Emergency Procedures • Safe movement & navigating in steep and broken ground
THE ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND
Saturday
9.30 am Course introduction
9.45 am Indoor workshop: Route planning, taking a compass bearing, weather and MS 1 recap. Preparation and final packing for your camping expedition.
12.00 pm Depart for wild campsite, set up camp, lunch
2.00 pm Practical hill walk - navigational techniques, walking on a compass bearing, pacing, distance and timings.
6.00 pm Dinner
7.00 pm Night navigation exercise
9.30 pm Return to camp
Sunday
8.00 am Breakfast & strike camp.
9.00 am Practical hill walk - review day 1 skills, Safe movement in ascent and descent of steeper and broken ground.
2.30 pm Workshop: Emergency procedures part 2
3.30 pm Debrief
4.00 pm Finish
