Award Description

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to teach lead climbing skills on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. It builds on the skills acquired in either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor schemes, one of which candidates must hold to access the Climbing Wall Development Instructor scheme.

The Climbing Wall Development Instructor Assessment course is £110 + wall entry with full course information sent on booking.    

You will also be required to bring along two non-lead climbers to teach on the assessment from 12.30. You will need to sign them and pay their wall entry on arrival  

Course Program 

Homework: 

Plan four-week programme introducing top rope climbers to leading 

Equipment, Belaying and Personal Skills 

• Personal lead climbing with active belaying 

• Comfortably lead 6a 

• Belaying and use of different belay devices 

• Ground anchors/ohm. 

Planning and structure of session 

• Four-week intro to lead lesson plan 

• Belay progression from bottom roping to lead 

• Clipping concepts with whole part whole learning 

• Progressive falling practices from bottom rope to lead 

Teaching and learning 

• Candidates deliver a 2hour session for two novice leaders 

• Progression from bottom roping to lead 

• Decision making around appropriate and differentiated tasks for each climber 

Decision Making  

• Assessing participance abilities and managing expectations 

• Differentiating the group and risk management 

• Progressive pathways 

• Demonstration of personal fall practice and good judgements 

• Dynamic risk assessing and making good judgements 

Basic problem solving  

• ‘Z’ clipping  

• Back clipping 

• Miss clip
