Award Description
Our Rock Skills courses are designed to provide structured training opportunities for people who want to learn more and become independent climbers. There are three different levels so that complete beginners and those with more experience can choose the most appropriate starting point.
Connect with others and learn to move on rock
A Rock Skills Introduction course is all about having a go and experiencing rock climbing for the first time. It can feel very unfamiliar, even for people who have climbed indoors, so allow SAAIGOutdoors and the BMC to support you climbing outside at your own pace. There will also be plenty of opportunities to get to know the other people on the course as you share new experiences at the crag.
Rock climbing is an activity that requires your full attention which is one of the reasons people love it so much. The focus can provide a welcome break from life’s other distractions and a Rock Skills Introduction is a great way to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of climbing on rock.

There are several essential skills involved in rock climbing safely and they will be the focus of every Rock Skills Introduction course. The harness, the rope, the belay device and karabiner allow climbers to keep themselves and others safe when used correctly which is why it’s so important to learn how the system works and how to check each other before leaving the ground.
