Award Description
This scheme is delivered on the island of Ireland ONLY. The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides a general introduction to hillwalking in Ireland and the fundamentals of mountain navigation. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, day and night navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland.
Our Mountain Skills 2 courses are run over two consecutive days, usually at weekends.
It includes a night navigation exercise on the first evening, of approx. 3 hours duration.
They are predominantly run in the Wicklow mountains.
It is strongly advised that you complete Mountain Skills 1 before participating in this course, as it builds on the skills acquired in MS1.
To participate in MS courses you should have a reasonable level of fitness with previous hillwalking experience.
We are fully qualified Mountain Leaders with REC 3 first aid certificates.
We work on a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to 6 clients.
Maps and compasses are provided for this course if required.
The MS 2 course covers the following topics:
Consolidation of topics covered in MS1.
The use of a compass in navigation using bearings.
Emergency procedures
Night navigation/poor visibility exercise.
Movement on steep and broken ground.
Duration: 2 Days
Location: Wicklow mountains (but can be other locations in Ireland on request)

Pre-requisites: Must have some previous hillwalking experience.
