Award Description

The Hill & Mountain Skills scheme is a great way to develop your personal skills and confidence in all elements of hill and mountain walking. From planning a coastal walk to navigating in complex terrain, these courses are an ideal opportunity to learn the basics and enjoy the countryside. THIS IS NOT THE HILL AND MOORLAND LEADER SCHEME.

About

Our Mountain Training Hill Skills Courses are run in the beautiful Rossendale Valley, part of the West Pennine Moors. We'll start the course, from Helmshore, which is ideally positioned on the edge of the moor. Local, friendly accommodation is available - please ask for details.

A Hill Skills course is your key to getting started in countryside and moorland walking. Abigail's Trails Hill Skills Course is designed to provide an inspirational, inclusive and supportive experience in the Lancashire Hills. We will provide the skills and confidence for you to embark on your own adventures off the beaten track, exploring more remote areas of the UK countryside and nature.

No previous hill walking experience is required because the content of the course is aimed at beginners. If you do have some experience of hill walking but aren’t confident about planning walks, navigating and understanding the equipment required, then a Hill Skills course is an ideal way to learn.

Please contact Abi Thompson at info@abigailstrails.co.uk for further details.

PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS NOT THE HILL AND MOORLAND LEADER SCHEME.

COURSE CONTENT:

Planning – how to successfully plan a hill walk in the UK or Ireland.

Walking skills – what things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills etc.).

Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills – how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

Navigation in the hills – everything from selecting a compass to navigation strategies and an intro to GPS.

Environmental knowledge – how to minimise your impact on the hill and information on good practice and useful organisations.

A certificate of attendance for completing the course

Lifetime use of Mountain Training’s digital logbook (DLOG) for recording your walks.

The Hill Skills course requires a moderate level of fitness. It is a practical course where you will be walking for a good part of each day, and learning along the way. Any health issues should be talked through with your Tutor prior to the start of the course.

Note that the course content will be adapted to match the participants abilities and needs. Group size will be a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 to enable a personalised approach.
