The workshop will cover IML summer rope work skills:

Day 1
Venue: Mont D’Olmes area(col de Cadene and ridge line), additional location Montferrier climbing crag.
Training will cover:
Spotting, group management, anchor assessment,belays,safeguarding clients on ascent and descent.

Day 2
Venue: Several are possible depending on conditions, eg. Pic de Soularac (north aspect), North facing slopes on Pic de St Barthelmey, Fixed equipment on path to Etang des Truits, Fixed equipment scenarios can also be set up at Montferrier crag.
Training will cover:
Movement on spring snow, kicking steps, cutting steps, micro spikes, terrain choice in line with 2024 UIMLA standard and awareness of spring thaw. Use of fixed equipment, anchor assessment, belays, rope management, scenarios

Please bring walking rope, slings, karabiners, helmet, micro spikes if you have them, walking axe, day sack for a full day in the mountains, packed lunches, and pen and paper.

The workshop will be delivered by Dave Norris who is an IML and WMCI. Dave has over 30 years experience of delivering a mountaineeing course to military groups and other organisations. He has worked in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Africa, Himalayas, South America, UAE and has extensive local knowledge of the area he now lives in, which is the French Pyrenees.

Dave writes:I know this area extremely well. I am out in these mountains regularly and have been for many years. I know the areas that are good and safe for training. My aim is to refresh skills for
IMLs that they do not use regularly and to generate discussion around dynamic risk assessments and making attendees aware of the 2024 UIMLA standard.
