WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
This workshop is a night navigation exercise to simulate poor visibility. We will be looking at standard for ML assessment, and what techniques and strategies we can adopt for effective navigation in these conditions. Gain confidence and check in with your skills, all instruction and feedback provided by ML course directors.
5:00pm-10:00pm (approx) - spring/autumn dates only
Open to ML trainees consolidating towards assessment.
Also open to qualifed folk looking to check in and avoid skills fade.
1 Day Workshop
Outline
-Equipment: maps and compasses and head torches
-Navigation coaching and selecting techniques for night navigation
-Gain accurate pacing and timing
-Introduce independent legs to landscape features
-Introduce ML style features for night nav (landscape features)
-Navigate in the dark to build towards solid, pragmatic navigation
-Goal setting and debriefs
-Discussion ahead of assessment

-Building confidence with contours
-Interpreting the Landscape
-Orientating the map
-Using your internal compass
-Walking on bearings accurately
-Compass work
-Accurate pacing/timing
-Choosing the right techniques
-Relocation techniques
-Learning to follow on bling legs
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED
OL4 map covering Bessy Boot, Rosthwaite Cam and Glaramara
Silva Expedition Type 4 compass (recommended)
Hill kit for a full day in the mountain day;
CATERING/FOOD
You will need to bring lunch, snacks and water for the day
