Award Description

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to teach lead climbing skills on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. It builds on the skills acquired in either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor schemes, one of which candidates must hold to access the Climbing Wall Development Instructor scheme.

Introductions and qualification pathway 

• Arrival and tour of wall 

• Assess suitable teaching areas and risk management of routes 

• Participation statement parent consent 

Equipment, Belaying and Personal Skills 

• Personal lead climbing with active belaying 

• Belaying and use of different belay devices 

• Different rope diameters  

• Ground anchors/ohm. 

Planning and structure of session 

• Belay progression from bottom roping to lead 

• Clipping concepts with whole part whole learning 

• Progressive falling practices from bottom rope to lead 

Decision Making  

• Assessing participance abilities and managing expectations 

• Differentiating the group and risk management 

• Progressive pathways 

• Demonstration of personal fall practice and good judgements 

• Dynamic risk assessing and making good judgements 

Teaching and learning 

• Lesson planning 

• Progression from bottom roping to lead 

• Clear progression  

• Considerations to psychological factors and anxiety 

Basic problem solving  

• ‘Z’ clipping  

• Back clipping 

• Miss clip 

One to one feedback discussing consolidation period and goal setting.
