About

Hill Skills

Our Hill Skills courses are designed to share the amazing world of hill walking in a welcoming, supportive, inclusive space. No previous hill walking experience is required because the content of the course is aimed at beginners.

We are familiar with working with a variety of needs and ensuring that our courses are participant centred. We never want cost to be a barrier to participation so there are three different rates to choose from.

1) Full rate: this is the full commercial rate for those that can afford it and choose to give something back by supporting Climb.

2) Rate for those on a low income.

3) Rate for those on means tested benefits.

The course runs over two full days, from 0900 until 1700 on both days. A number of venues in the Eastern Peak District will be used. These will be decided on nearer the time, depending on conditions.

The course will cover the following topics:

- Planning: how to successfuly plan a hill walk in the UK or Ireland.

- Walking skills: what things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills).

- Clothing and equipment: being suitable dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster.

- Weather: how it affects the hills and your day out.

- Navigation in the hills: everything from selecting a compass to navigation strategies and an intro to GPS.

- Environmental knowledge: how to minimise your impact on the hill and information on good practice and useful organisations.

- Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills: how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

Note that the course content will be adapted to match the participants abilities with instructors teaching techniques appropriate to those attending.
