WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
OVERVIEW
Being an outdoor instructor on the days when it all goes right, is the best job in the world, but have you given it much thought about how quickly things can go wrong? Genuine accidents can happen to anyone, and the MTA Lakes team have organised a visit to the Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, to get tips on how to prepare in advance to stop a small incident escalating, how you can prepare best to react in event of an emergency, and what will happen as soon as you call for assistance.
SKILLS
This knowledge will help you become a safer and better leader, who has adapted what group kit is carried, to stop a bad day getting worse, and who can act quickly and effectively on the scene of an accident, to manage the casualty(s) as well as the rest of the group. You will learn about communications, working around helicopters, group management, and also discuss what equipment you could consider carrying, and what MRT will bring to an incident scene in event of an accident.
KNOWLEDGE
With your increased awareness about how mountain rescue works, and the agencies that they work alongside, you can make better decisions with your groups when leading, as well as prioritise what to do when an incident occurs.
PRACTICAL
You will be shown around the base of one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in the country, so see the range of kit and capabilities that can be utilised, from a logistics / medical / rigging / water / and mountain safety viewpoint. From a mountain rescue perspective, helping share learning and knowledge with outdoor instructors, is an essential part of our proactive mountain safety activities, and we are delighted to welcome the Lakes MTA section to our base soon.
