WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Workshop will be delivered through informal discussions out on-the-hill.
Parking and meeting in the Greenhill YMCA FREE car park.
The Session will begin with a short briefing in the car park before setting off towards the Glen River, following the river up through Donard Forest and out onto the low heathland, observing the Flora and Fauna along the way.
In addition to identifying as many Flora and Fauna species as can be found, discussion will also include Respecting the Natural Outdoor Environment and what we as Leaders; Lowland, Hill and Moorland and Mountain can do to educate and encourage those that we lead to minimise their impact when out hiking.
The recent Mourne fires and the start of the spring into summer season with it's increase in footfall and effects of meandering / ribboning will be discussed along with hiking poor / bad practices.
The format of the event will be flexible to accommodate input and questions from all participants whilst endeavouring to cover as much Flora, Fauna and Respecting the Natural Outdoor Environment as possible during the available time.
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED:
Be prepared for an afternoon in the mountains with regular stops for 'Look-Listen-Learn' sessions along the route - warm and dry layers if not initially worn should be carried.
Usual mountain footwear, clothing and small day pack will be required by all participants.
NOTE:
The use of Flora and Fauna identification cards along with a notebook and pencil may be useful throughout the afternoon - as will the magnifying lense of a compass.
CATERING/FOOD:
Bring sufficient food, snacks and drinks for 3-4 hours in the mountains during the afternoon.
WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS:
Led by Carole Reid of Mourne Heritage Trust (MHT) - Carole has been an Engagement Ranger for the MHT for the past 3 years following a season of Countryside Officer work with the Trust on pathwork and landscaping on Slieve Gullion, Binnian and the Glen River.
Prior to this Carole lived, worked and explored Australia for most of her adult life, gaining qualifications in Cultural Heritage Tour Guiding, Museum Studies and at various stages becoming, as Carole describes herself; a half baked nurse(!) and economist at Universities of Glasgow and Tasmania respectively.
Despite multiple efforts Carole has gloriously failed at being conventional in any way, and so has come full circle and continues to learn and share learning about landscapes and their life shaping peaks and troughs, encouraging others’ participation in the outdoors with a particular interest in the intersection of physical, social and emotional wellbeing and inclusion with 'connection to nature' through interpretation of natural environment, culture and heritage.
That all stems from participating in a Aspirant Mountain Leadership course at Killowen OEC sometime in the early 1990’s to lived experience of surviving traumatic news on a summit camp of Queenslands highest mountains (Yes - Australia has mountains as well as big rocks) and results in getting other people excited about having actually observed details walked passed everyday.
CANCELLATION POLICY:
Not applicable as this is a Free Mountain Training Association Peer Led event.
