Award Description

This scheme is delivered on the island of Ireland ONLY. The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides a general introduction to hillwalking in Ireland and the fundamentals of mountain navigation. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, day and night navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland. 

The Mountain Skills 2 builds on the skills already learned during Mountain Skills 1. If you have not completed a Mountain Skills 1 course but you have a good idea on how to navigate and you are competent in the mountains and you want to improve your skills this course is for you.

Mountain Skills 2 focuses on using a compas as an aid to navigation. Day one will start with the basics of compass work before we navigate across the mountains as the light fades and we end up in darkness navigating by compass from point to point. 

After a late finish on day one, day two typically starts a little later and we focus on movement techniques. We look at how to move efficiently over steep ground before moving into complex terrain and introducing the fundamentals of scrambling techniques. 

If you are considering doing your Mountain Skills assessment completing the Mountain Skills programme allows you fast track your journey as well as giving you a good idea of what to expect on your assessment.
