Award Description
This scheme is delivered on the island of Ireland ONLY. The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides a general introduction to hillwalking in Ireland and the fundamentals of mountain navigation. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, day and night navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland.

COURSE SUMMARY
This course is designed to impart the necessary skills in navigation (in rain, mist or darkness) and knowledge of hazards, equipment and movement in steep ground so that an individual may be confident and in a position to safely pursue hill-walking as a hobby. It also provides the foundation training for those who wish to progress on to the national and internationally recognised leadership qualifications.
COURSE CONTENT
Introduction, maps, mapsetting, contour features, distance estimation, navigation techniques, depiction of relief, mountain hazards, personal equipment, pacing and timing, feature recognition, grid references, introduction to compass, route card, mountain environment (access, flora, fauna, geology, placenames), Leave No Trace, mountain weather.

ZOOM SESSION
Indoor session will be done on Zoom on the Thursday evening at 7.30pm before the weekend of the course.
COURSE NOTES
You'll be given comprehensive course notes and online videos to go through at your own leisure after the weekend.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
All courses are directed by Adrian Hendroff, a member of the Mountain Training Association (MTA). Adrian is fully insured, Garda Vetted and has an up-to-date Rescue and Emergency Care (REC3) first aid certificate. He is also a member of the Outdoor Writers & Photographers Guild (OWPG) and is the author of several books and a regular contributor to newspapers and outdoor magazines.
