Award Description

The Lowland Leader qualification has been designed for people who wish to lead groups on day walks in lowland countryside and woodland in summer conditions. The majority of the UK and Ireland is made up of this type of terrain so you'll never be short of places to go walking.

🧭 Overview

This course develops the skills and judgment required to confidently and safely lead groups in lowland countryside and woodland.

1. Duration: Minimum of 16 hours

✅ Before You Attend

Prerequisites

• Min age for training 17
• You must be registered with Mountain Training
• You must have recorded a minimum of 10 quality lowland day walks registered in your Digital Logbook (DLOG)

📘 What You’ll Learn

The course follows the Lowland Leader syllabus. Topics include:

• Leadership and group management
• Route planning, map work & navigation
• Hazards and emergency procedures
• Equipment (personal and group)
• Access, conservation, and land ownership

📝 Outcomes

1. Completed: You have attended and completed the training course and met the prerequisite requirements.
2. Not Yet Completed: If for any reason you do not complete the required hours you will receive this result. In all cases an action plan will be discussed and created for you.

📢 Reminder: Training does not equal qualification. Assessment must be passed separately.

Day 1 – Online Intro, 25th August 2025

Topics: Ethos, pathway, outcomes, Mountain Training structure

Day 2 – Field Day, 30th August 2025

📍 The Hampshire Hog, Waterlooville, Hants - PO8 0QD
🕙 10:00–18:00

Topics: Navigation, equipment, hazards, conservation, group management
🌒 Evening: Navigation in poor visibility

Day 3 – Field Day, 31st August 2025

📍 The Hampshire Hog, Waterlooville, Hants - PO8 0QD
🕘 09:00–15:00
Topics: Route planning, responsibility, emergency procedures, personal action planning

🎒 What to Bring

Basic kit list (not exhaustive):

1. Food & water for long days
2. Walking clothes + waterproofs
3. Spare warm layer
4. Rucksack (30–40L)
5. Boots
6. Hat/gloves or sun protection
7. Compass (Silva Type 4 recommended)
8. OS Map OL8 – Chichester
9. Head torch + spare batteries
10. Notebook + pen + Sharpie
11. Personal medication
12. First aid kit (group/personal)

🧭 More Opportunities
