About

As outdoor educators, instructors, coaches, MTS assessors, trainers and tutors we have highly developed personal technical skills relevant to the courses we deliver. However, we need to be equally well developed educators with an understanding of how people learn in order to be able to pass these skills on to candidates AND to be able help those candidates further develop those they are leading or instructing. If the hard skills of walking, climbing and mountaineering are the “what to teach” this course focusses on the “how to teach”. Over the course of this 1 day workshop we will delve into getting to know your clients, creating the optimum learning environment, how learning happens, teaching approaches, methods and styles, observation and analysis and giving feedback. This will be done in an interactive way, which will allow those attending to benefit from each other’s experiences as well as the workshop deliverers; a great opportunity to share ideas and gain insights from fellow professionals.

The course will be staffed by Doug Cooper and Sandy Paterson - both trainers and assessors with a long time involvement with training and assessing on the Mountain Training qualification schemes including at Mountaineering Instructor level.

Prior to the course you will be sent a link to an on-line resource, consisting of a 20–30 minute course that introduces some of the ideas that will cover in during the workshop. This must be completed prior to attending this course. The content of the workshop will be to add further understanding, depth and contextualisation of the online resource. The aim will be to clearly show the progression from ‘leadership’ teaching & learning to ‘instructor’ teaching & learning by highlighting the common themes and additional skills/behaviours an instructor will need"

This workshop is a mandatory part of the process of becoming a Mountain Training Scotland (MTS) approved Skills Tutor
