Award Description
This award trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on single pitch crags and climbing walls. Common activities undertaken by an SPA holder will be roped climbing and bouldering. The SPA does not include the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing.
About
The course will be held in the North Lakes based at Kong Adventure Centre. We will use at least two crags being Brantrake Saturday and Lower Scout Crag Sunday and the Kong Adventure Climbing Wall. The course will be 1:4 staff/candidate ratio. I have been an MIC Holder since 1982. I know candidates have different learning styles and differing abilities and levels of confidence. I aim to deliver my courses sensitively with empathy, using my extensive experience gained through 40 years in the education service. As well as running Single Pitch Award Courses I continue to also work with a wide variety of groups on a regular basis, delivering climbing sessions to scouts, school pupils, families and groups of adults. The Single Pitch Award Training Course is a 20 hour delivery course. Many skills are covered. The short sharp sessions are designed to turn climbers into instructors who are able to motivate & coach rock climbing safely to a wide range of groups. Mountain Training Registration: You must create an account and be registered with Mountain Training for the Single Pitch Award Scheme, in order to book onto and complete this course. At the end of the course you will have a helpful & constructive debrief. It is then up to candidates to go on and further their experience whilst working toward a successful assessment.
