Day: The title of the day is "Teaching Mountain Running", and the focus is on techniques for coaching fell and trail running to clients, as this is a rapidly growing market for many IMLs. There will be plenty enough running during the day, but this is a coaching and training day, rather than simply running. In terms of fitness it will suffice to be able to run 10km. To get the most out of this session, you should ideally have a little mountain running experience, but this not essential. During the day you will learn about running biomechanics, teaching ascent and descent techniques, pacing, use of running poles, runners nav, guiding techniques for running clients, and safety considerations for an IML leading a running group. The day will involve a lot of technique analysis and learning how to coach runners.
Kit: Each runner should adapt to their previous experience, but as an absolute minimum you should bring FRA mandatory kit; map (OL1), compass, whistle, hat, gloves, waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, bumbag / race vest, fell / trail running shoes (not road shoes), reserve of food, emergency blanket / bag, extra warm layer, bottle / flask of minimum 1 litre, head torch. Optional items you may find useful include; altimeter, GPS watch / unit, running poles, waterproof gloves, beanie hat, running gaiters.
