Bio: Jacqui Young has been a freelance outdoor educator for the last 15 years and has a passion for water safety. Jacqui has a small business educating people in and around open water – www.waterwisecumbria.co.uk

Jacqui lives in the Lake District but her work takes her to interesting places all around the world. Jacqui is a keen mountaineer, having an International Mountain Leader and a Winter Mountain leader, but also loves being in and around water.

Jacqui can teach and train the Royal lifesaving society (RLSS) National Water safety Management programme (NWSMP), National Pool lifeguard (NLPQ), National rescue award for swimming teachers and coaches (NRASTC), Survive and Save Programme and she is an open water swimming teacher.

Jacqui is also a member of the Kendal Mountain rescue team and training a search dog called Ivy.  She also loves to go mountain biking and swim the odd lake in her spare time.

RLSS National Water Safety Management Programme

Level 1 – Water Safety Awareness

The water safety training course is designed to meet the civil and statutory safety management obligation of employers of people who work near, in or around water – especially those with a supervisory responsibility

The Learning outcomes for the water safety course are as follows:

  • Identify a range of open water hazards
  • Understand the effects of cold water immersion on the body
  • Demonstrate minimum level of water safety & personal safety awareness and personal protective equipment
  • Show an understanding of legal requirements and duty of care
  • Understand principles of water safety and risk assessment
  • Show an understanding of the principles of rescue and rescuer safety
  • Understand how to manage a group safely around the water margins
  • Apply practical risk management skills and appropriate controls
  • Demonstrate competence in land-based ‘Emergency Response’ rescues

This is a certification course from the RLSS (Royal lifesaving society) which will cover the Level 1 – Water Safety Awareness which is valid for 2 years.  Level 2 River, Beach, Stillwater, PPE and Flood awareness and Level 3 – In Water rescue are also part of the suite of courses available under the NWSMP.   • Level 1 Self Study unit
  • Level 1 Guided Learning Unit

  • Completed question paper
  • Note pad, pen
  • The session will be split between inside and outside, so please bring suitable clothing and footwear
