NNAS Tutor Qualification - Sunday Full Day Workshop
Time: 09.00 - 17.00
Workshop provider: Nigel Williams
Bio: Nigel holds the MIC award and was on the very first IML course run in the UK he is also a level 3 Orienteering Coach. Since 1997 he was head of training at Glenmore Lodge for 20 years until retiring at the end of 2017. He initially developed this workshop to support the work of Mountain Training and the challenges that candidates have with this area of training and assessment. The NNAS also recognised the need for training tutors and with their awards beginning to gain SCQF recognition it became necessary to implement a quality control system of which this course is a part.
Workshop Content: This one day (8 hour) workshop is focused on a range of logical progressions and ideas for teaching navigation and assumes competence in the basic skills of navigation. It is also a requirement for anyone thinking of taking up the provision of or working on NNAS Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. The Bronze award is now on the SCQF at level 4 worth 2 credits for young people in education which is increasing the uptake of the awards by schools, DofE, Skill Force UK and others.
Prior to the workshop all attendees will be required to sign in and create an account with NNAS through their website www.NNAS.org.uk which is run by Tahdah. It is free to do this. There is an additional charge of £10 per person which is not included in the course fee for the admin process.
The teaching methodology is simple and provides clear progressions in all the skills of navigation teaching from map setting to winter navigation skills. The workshop is also very suitable for anyone working on Mountain Training Walking Awards from LL to Winter ML and MIA.
The day is a mix of indoor and outdoor activity. Please come prepared for the outdoors in late November. Wellies are fine, we will not be more than about 1km from the venue. Bring your compass and a map case. Pen, pencil and note book. Mapping will be provided.
Optional Cost: There is an option to purchase the Teaching Navigation book by Nigel published in March this year, which is available through Harvey Maps and Amazon and will be available on the day, price £15.
The day should be entertaining and I can guarantee people will gain a few personal navigation skills as well.
