Workshop or Session Description: A basic GPS training course for aspirant or fully qualified international mountain leaders
who might have used a GPS device in the past, wish to learn more before buying one, or may even own one but not used it much. It is also ideal as a GPS technology refresher and update for regular users of older devices.

This course highlights the capabilities of modern
devices, focusing on the market-leading Garmin GPS units and really gets to grip with the 5 core GPS skills: set-up & operation, location, waypoints, basic nav and track-back. It comprises classroom sessions and extensive practical exercises indoors and outside. It also covers using a GPS internationally, leadership aspects of GPS and plenty of practical advice aimed at mountaineers both in summer and winter conditions.

Included is the hire of a modern Garmin GPS unit for the day (but participants are encouraged to use their own GPS if it is suitable), together with high-quality colour illustrated course notes to take
away.

Venue:  It is based at the Hollowford Centre in the Hope valley close to Castleton, an easily accessible location set in relatively easy terrain and minutes away from steeper terrain to practice mountain GPS techniques.  It also has ample parking and plenty of local accommodation possibilities

Equipment list: As much of the GPS course is outdoors-based, it is essential to bring along clothing suitable for all weathers.

Times: The course will start at 10.00am and finish by 4.30pm.

bring a picnic lunch and be prepared with clothing to be outdoors in any weather.
Initially, the course is only open to BAIML members (including aspirants) and there is a maximum of 8 participants, so there is plenty of opportunity for personal mentoring and
tuition. If it is undersubscribed, it will be opened to AMI and MTA members as well. The
course qualifies for one- point core CPD which is valid for BAIML, AMI and MTA. It is
possible to follow the basic course with the advanced course the next day and receive two CPD points.
