Award Description
The Hill & Mountain Skills scheme is a great way to develop your personal skills and confidence in all elements of hill and mountain walking. From planning a coastal walk to navigating in complex terrain, these courses are an ideal opportunity to learn the basics and enjoy the countryside. THIS IS NOT THE HILL AND MOORLAND LEADER SCHEME.
Mountain Skills Courses are nationally accredited and developed by Mountain Training, they are aimed to equip you with the required knowledge, expertise and skills to enjoy the mountains safely.
What does the Mountain Skills Course Cover?
Planning - How can we plan a walk to suite our needs.
Walking skills - The essentials of movement over varieties of terrain.
Clothing and equipment - Apparently there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad equipment. How can we prepare ourselves to match our environment.
Weather - How the climate can affect us in the mountains and how we can use this information in our planning or on the hill.
Navigation in the mountains - At best, navigation is our means of getting around our chosen route for maximum enjoyment, a worst it can be the necessary means to escape from a tricky situation. We will look at using maps and compasses to keep us on route and knowing where we are at all times and have an introductory look into the variety of GPS systems which can aid us on our way.
Environmental - Looking into how we can ensure these landscapes are preserved for the future.
Hazards and emergency procedures in the mountains - The ways and means of getting help or getting ourselves out of emergency situations in the mountains.
Prior Experience and Fitness
You should be expecting to be out on the hill for 5-6 hours each day on a variety of terrains away from maintained footpaths. Usually we will aim to complete part of the course in low-light/darkness, this would be done on the Saturday if this is the case.
Any health issues should be talked through with myself prior to the start of the course.
What is included?
All instruction and learning resources, certificate upon completion, all group safety equipment, use of maps and compasses if requested (it's always nice to have your own though). If there is any specific equipment you feel you might need to borrow, let me know in advance and I'll see what I can find.
What is not included?
Registration fee with Mountain Training,
Personal clothing and equipment,
Transport or Accommodation.
