Our Rock Skills courses are designed to provide structured training opportunities for people who want to learn more and become independent climbers. There are three different levels so that complete beginners and those with more experience can choose the most appropriate starting point.

Mountain Skills Training offer a full range of outdoor courses including winter skills, winter mountaineering, mountain skills, map reading and navigation.  

 

All of our courses are delivered by qualified, experienced and passionate instructors.

Who is it for

This course is designed for those looking to increase their confidence or refresh their Trad leading skills with the aim of helping you become an independent climber. It is also a useful progression for those wishing to progress to the Rock Climbing Instructor scheme.

 

You must have seconded a minimum of 20 rock climbs at grade “Very Difficult” or above OR have led 20 sport climbs – indoors or outdoors. You must also have belayed a climber on 20 occasions.

 

What does a Rock Skills Learn To Lead Course Cover?

  • Selecting suitable venues and routes; how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette, the importance of the climbing partnership and the work of the mountaineering councils.
  • Safe and assured movement when leading climbs and optimising natural rests for placing protection (wired nuts and camming devices etc).
  • Ropes and technical equipment for lead climbing, the lead rack and how to carry it, selection and function of gear.
  • Selection and placement of suitable equipment to protect leader and second, choosing anchors, effective ropework, attaching to multiple anchors, belaying, holding leader and second falls in a controlled environment. The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics and environmental considerations for climbers.
  • Identifying hazards, decision making and managing risk, understanding common injuries, what to do in the event of an incident, managing common problems, how to get help and learning how Mountain Rescue.
